A quick update on my campaign for Oakland County Commissioner here in Mitt Romney’s hometown:
So, I was supposed to participate in an open candidate forum last Thursday; the League of Women Voters scheduled a combined forum for both my district (the 12th) as well as the 13th district, which is right next to mine.
So, I wrote up an opening and closing statement, and was nervously prepping for the event...when the LWV called me up and informed me that due to a technical glitch, they have to reschedule the forum for July 12th. Ah, well.
I also met the Republican opponent challenging my Democratic counterpart in the 13th district while out at dinner last night—he actually seems like a nice enough guy, and we actually some things in common because his district was just as heavily gerrymandered for the Democratic incumbent as mine is for the Republican incumbent. Each of us is facing an expected 30-point loss, based on the 2012 & 2014 results, so we’re both realistic about our situations. Anyway, he claims to be a “moderate Republican” and stated, without any prompting, that he voted for John Kasich in the presidential primary.
Of course, Kasich’s actual policies are horrifically extremist/right-wing, especially on abortion, but I understood his point...he really just meant that he’s embarrassed by Trump...and this year, that’s what passes for “moderate” to Republicans, it appears.
Anyway, he did let slip one interesting tidbit relevant to my own campaign: While the incumbent Republican in my district appears to be relying on her machine (name recognition, establishment support, showing up at parades and the like only), she doesn’t appear to be actually canvassing...while her primary challenger absolutely is doing so (in fact, he’s been walking the district longer than I’ve even been officially running). I still suspect that she’s gonna brush him off in the primary, but it may be much closer than expected.
Speaking of canvassing, I finally have my first batch of lit pieces, and have my walking list prepped, so it’s for me to finally jump into that stage.
Oh, yeah, one more thing: Tomorrow happens to be my 46th birthday, so naturally I’m exploiting it by putting out a “donate $4.60, $46 or $460!” ActBlue page. I’m not bothering with any particular dollar or donor thermometer target for this, however, since to be honest I always find these to be a bit annoying myself. I figured I was kind of obliged to do so, but I’m not exactly pushing it.
