Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley has not been handling the pressure of being one of the faces of the Republican Supreme Court blockade particularly well, especially since it’s combined with the pressure of a potentially competitive re-election campaign. Grassley has been ranting and whining and making stuff up, and the local newspapers have noticed—as have voters, based on the polls. So this is a good strategy from his Democratic opponent, Patty Judge: She’s challenging him to four televised debates and one radio debate.
“Iowans have an important choice in this election and four televised debates in Iowa’s largest media markets will give voters all across the state the opportunity to see both candidates before casting their ballot. I’m excited to talk with voters about how we can break the gridlock and get back to work for families across Iowa,” said Patty Judge. “I hope Chuck Grassley agrees to participate in a series of four televised debates across Iowa and allow voters to make an informed decision in November.”
Judge’s press release points out that Grassley hasn’t done live televised debates in recent election cycles, so even if he was holding up beautifully under pressure, he might be a little out of practice at debating. But based on his recent string of missteps, his issues with debating might go beyond being out of practice. And it seems like local media might not be inclined to let him off the hook when he tries to get out of debating.
