• Two-and-a-half weeks after Orlando massacre, seven victims are still hospitalized: Authorities made the announcement just a day after police and fire officials released hundreds of pages of documents detailing the June 12 Pulse nightclub shooting that left 49 dead and injured 53. Five of those still being treated are in “stable” condition, one in “guarded,” and one is still “critical.” Surgeons say they’ve performed 63 operations on one of the victims.
• Canada, Mexico, U.S. pledge to boost development of clean power: At the Three Amigos summit in Ottawa, leaders of the three nations vowed to see half of North America’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2025. Those sources will include including nuclear, hydro and other renewables and carbon capture and storage projects, the White House says. In 2015, about 37 percent of North American electricity came from these sources. The addition of more clean energy will also cut carbon emissions. “The Paris Agreement was a turning point for our planet,” the leaders said in a joint statement. “Our actions to align climate and energy policies will protect human health and help level the playing field for our businesses, households and workers.” The climate activist group 350.org issued a statement:
“This is a big step forward in the fight against climate change. But let’s be clear: declaring ambitious goals like these, or the ones world governments made in Paris, is not the same as taking real action that scientists say is necessary to prevent the most catastrophic impacts of global warming. To actually reach 50% clean energy by 2025 requires making room for real investment in renewable energy infrastructure by keeping fossil fuels in the ground.”
