It was this time last year that we shared our first “Crazy/Stupid profile of former Arkansas Governor, and 2016 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, whose past we delved deep into, all the way back to 1973 when he worked for a Baptist newspaper called “The Rapture Express” where he would write about the dread menaces of things like women not wearing bras, or wearing short skirts, or gays, or teenagers dancing! OH MY! Back in 1992, while campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat, Huckabee suggested the novel idea of quarantining AIDS patients. In both 2007 and in 2011, he used his newfound media profile on Fox News and conservative talk radio to lament the pregnancies of Jamie Lynn Spears, and Natalie Portman, for happening out of wedlock, which is a slightly different reaction than the defense he put up for the media paying any attention to Bristol Palin being pregnant in 2008. Huckabee has also defended the Confederate flag, and then compares abortion to slavery (he surprise, he supports fetal “Personhood”). Huckabee also praises “historian” and exposed fraud David Barton, and his lies that the United States is a Christian nation that was never intended to have a separation of church and state, saying “every American should be forced at gunpoint to learn from him”. (Because that in no way would be a military indoctrination into a theocracy.) Huckabee not only defended the “legitimiate rape” comments by Congressman Todd Akin, but claimed people were only attacking him “because he was a Christian”. He can simultaneously complain about Beyonce being exploited by “Jay-Z acting like her pimp”, or Miley Cyrus being too scandalous, while he instead goes about performing on bass guitar for Ted Nugent in a rendition of “Cat Scratch Fever”, a song about getting an STD (Nugent, incidentally, also admits to having sex with underage girls numerous times in his heyday). Huckabee has also called for the impeachment of President Obama for “acting like God”, freaked out over Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend on ESPN during the NFL draft, and threatened to leave the Republican Party should they ever stop fighting to overturn the ruling on same sex marriage. Incidentally, Huckabee has rabidly attacked the Supreme Court since their ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, saying the United States was now “worse than Sodam and Gomorrah”, and that HIS first amendment freedom of religion is being violated because gay people can get married. Huckabee also creeped everyone right out when he gave his opinion on transgendered bathroom use and said he would have done it as a teen to “get into the ladies’ locker room”. Huckabee is enough of a “victimized Christian” that he complains that “the left won’t rest until there are no more churches” and after news broke that his longtime favorite family, the Duggars were revealed to have turned a blind eye to the fact that their son, Josh Duggar was molesting some of his sisters and their friends, Huckabee defended them.
What we’re getting at here is Mike Huckabee is a theocratic loon. And while he campaigned for President in 2016, he didn’t dial it back much. Instead, he opened the floodgates to spew out as much bigoted, self-righteous venom as he could, hoping it would win him the GOP nomination:
- September 2nd, 2015: Mike Huckabee praises the Center for Medical Progress for their work in creating the Planned Parenthood “sting” videos, saying that they “deserve to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom”. Well, unfortunately, all they would be is indicted for tampering with government records.
- September 8th, 2015: Huckabee picks his latest Christian martyr-of-the-moment, anti-gay marriage Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, and stages a rally at her release from jail for refusing to do her job and issue marriage certificates to same sex couples, walking out with her to the song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor being played. Funny postscript to this story? Survivor sued Huckabee and won thousands of dollars for using their song to promote his and Davis’ bigotry.
- October 5th: 2015: Mike Huckabee calls for a boycott of Rainbow Doritos for supporting the LGBT community. This is surprising, since once upon a time, when a boycott was organized against Chik-Fil-A after it was discovered their executives supported anti-LGBT causes, Huckabee described that as “economic terrorism”.
- October 15th, 2015: Huckabee, undoubtedly inspired by his supposed deep Christian faith, advises others to not take in Syrian refugees “just because they’re not living a very fancy life”.
- October 26th, 2015: After a Department of Justice investigation report comes out that the “IRS Scandal” was much ado about nothing, Huckabee comments on the lack of wrongdoing by saying that none was found because of a “coverup”.
- November 4th, 2015: Mike Huckabee encourages House Republicans to protest President Obama’s executive orders on immigration by defunding the White House.
- November 23rd, 2015: Huckabee flat out lies and says that the United States government is deporting a German family who came to the United States in 2010 because they wanted to home-school their children as Christians But the Romeike family Huckabee mentioned were not being deported, at all. Still, Huckabee insisted this was proof that “there is a war on the Chrisitan faith in this country.” He also, later in the evening, claimed President Obama attacks Republicans more than ISIS.
- November 30th, 2015: Mike Huckabee criticizes the Planned Parenthood shooter, Roland Dear, for his actions, but immediately then equates his killings with his own victims, who in Huckabee’s mind, were also murderers.
- December 4th, 2015: Huckabee claims that having LGBT citizens serving in the United States Armed Forces and says it is because of “twisted ideology”, and that it has made morale at an all-time low:
“The morale in our military has never been lower. Among our service men and women, there is a great sense of discouragement because they did not sign up to be a part of a special club to try out social experiments to appease those who push for political correctness. Instead of focusing on keeping the country safe, there has been such a focus to making sure that we have same-sex relationships that were celebrated in the military, that we push for a complete inclusion and even the taxpayer-funded payment of transgender surgery for service persons who believe that they are another gender. I cannot imagine why we would spend a dime changing the gender of someone in the military when we have vets coming back without arms and legs that are waiting months in a VA facility, that is inexcusable.
Military service members shouldn’t cook meals, build schools, make nice shelters and do the work of the Peace Corps. The purpose of the United States military is to kill people and break things and to create the most awesome, feared force on the face of the earth. Only then will America’s enemies respect us.”
- December 16th, 2015: Huckabee defends the idea of monitoring mosques, and chastising liberals for suggesting such an act would be a violation of the freedom of religion Muslims, as well as that liberals would believe they have a Christian duty to aid Syrian refugees, because “they are waging war on Christmas”.
- January 6th, 2016: Mike Huckabee goes on Facebook to rant about President Obama, and the fact that he was pushing for universal background checks on firearm purchases, but not fetal Personhood by applying the 5th and 14th amendments to the unborn.
- January 14th, 2016: Huckabee speaks with Breitbart News, where he decides to smear Hillary Clinton in every way possible, bringing up the Lewinsky scandal (which was still Bill), then lying about the facts about the attacks in Benghazi, and getting a hat trick of partisan douchebaggery by finishing with the ludicrous claim that she would “use massive voter fraud” to win in November.
- April 6th, 2016: Mike Huckabee, in a Newsmax interview, praises former GOP Presidential Primary rival Donald Trump’s “immigration plan”, saying his idea to cut off money illegal immigrants are trying to pay their families with a physical border wall is “a clever, shrewd idea”.
- July 11th, 2016: After tensions rise in the wake of the shocking police killings of Alton Sterling and Philandro Castle, Mike Huckabee takes it upon himself to respond to the outcry from the Black Lives Matter movement by calling for… the “Male Lives Matter” movement.
At this point, to be honest, it’s embarrassing that a Fundamentalist lunatic like Mike Huckabee is given any platform to be a voice in American politics. He is, by and large, the most tangible evidence of the negative impact the Republican Party’s courtship of the Religious Right has had upon them, being one of the three legs on their very wobbly stool. Hopefully, before much longer, Fox News will agree with voters that he’s irrelevant as anyone who deserves much notice.
