tonight’s feature presentation: Songs for Sunday
Queen — Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon
I swear, for any given category you can come up with, there’s a Queen song that fits. This short little ditty from 1975 is very catchy, and has been rolling around in my brain cells for decades now. It’s just amazing how many diverse styles and musical techniques that foursome covered in their time together. Perhaps, in this song, Sunday might have been a day for Freddie to recover from the debauchery of the previous night. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Here’s the second half of the entire lyrics:
I come from London Town, I'm just an ordinary guy
Fridays I go painting in the Louvre
I'm bound to be proposing on a Saturday night (there he goes again)
I'll be lazing on a Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday afternoon
Johnny Cash — Sunday Morning Coming Down
If Queen’s Sunday number was light and jaunty, Johnny Cash’s contribution is on the dark side. He was known for heavy drug use at a time in his life. This song comes across as a commentary on coming down from the drugs and booze of Saturday, and hating Sunday for it. The song was written by Kris Kristofferson in 1969, and covered by several artists including Cash. The version here apparently comes from Cash’s TV show in 1970.
On a Sunday morning sidewalk
I'm wishing Lord that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
The Chordettes (and The Muppets) — Never on Sunday
Never on Sunday was a 1960 romantic comedy film, and the title track performed by Melina Mercouri won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film was Greek, as were the original lyrics; the English-language version became very popular. The song has been recorded by everybody from Bing Crosby to the Muppets. Here are two versions: The Chordettes are up first, followed by Miss Piggy and the gang in their trademarked controlled mayhem.
U2 — Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday January 30, 1972 was a horrific day in Derry, Northern Ireland, and became known as Bloody Sunday. British soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians, killing fourteen. This protest song by U2, released in 1983, is one of the band’s signature pieces.
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
Maroon 5 — Sunday Morning
Turning in a different direction from political protests, this song from Maroon 5’s 2002 debut album was released as a single in 2004, and reached number 31 on the Top 40 charts.
Sunday morning, rain is falling
Steal some covers, share some skin
Clouds are shrouding us in moments unforgettable
You twist to fit the mold that I am in
k-os — Sunday Morning
No, no, no, not that guy. This “k-os” is a Canadian hip hop (multi-genre, in fact) musician. This song was released as a single from his third album in 2007, and went to number 19 on the Canadian Singles Chart. He also performed it on The Late Show With David Letterman the same year.
Everyday is Saturday night,
But I can't wait for
Sunday morning, Sunday morning
The Doors — Blue Sunday
This song is kind of weird to listen to. It was typically played on radio immediately following Peace Frog, which blended into Blue Sunday on the 5th studio album by The Doors. The song by itself is an interesting study in contrasts: reading the lyrics, you see a short story about finding true love. But the music, and the way the song is sung, is something of a downer.
I found my own true love was on a Blue Sunday
She looked at me and told me I was the only
One in the world, now I have found my girl
Etta James — A Sunday Kind Of Love
They don’t make voices like this any more. Etta James’ first album, in 1960, was At Last!. You know the one. She covered A Sunday Kind of Love on this album, a song that was published in 1946 and also recorded by many other artists. This version has that great Etta sound.
I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I'd like to know it's more than love at first sight
And I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yea yea
The Mamas & The Papas — Monday Monday
Huh? Calm down. Some of you might be reading this after midnight, which means it’s already Monday where you are. This one is just for you. I don’t like to leave anybody out. And it’s one of my favorites from the 1966 debut album of The Mamas & The Papas.
Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin', it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday mornin', Monday mornin' couldn't guarantee
That Monday evenin' you would still be here with me
There’s tons of stuff out there with a Sunday theme. What’s your favorite that I missed?

From gchaucer2, cheered on by zenbassoon:
One of our new contributors has been on a roll but this comment thread is pretty hilarious. It is in brooklynbadboy's diary on the exhausted Trump: “Exhausted, sullen, erratic, volatile, frustrated, bewildered, confused, scared”. The thread kicks off with gf120581’s New ad. Lily Von Shtupp's responses are funny to hilarious. Welcome Lily.
