Enough with tearing Tim up for being boring . Sheesh even Hillary’s Podcast person ripped him for wanting to vacation with his wife. Comics like Colbert and Oliver tear him to shreds for not launching into combat mode or playing his harmonica. The dad jokes are fun but have begun falling into the Dumb Blonde category.
Thanks to our media culture, we are addicted to bad boys.. We want to see and
hear who tore up a bar, screamed profanities at their coach, or savaged their female partners. Contrast him with the nerd who plays by the rules; if he is not killed off early, he gets ridiculed into changing. (As a lesbian, I can tell you the behavior is not restricted by gender.)
Now step outside the media construct and remember who mattered in your life. Was it the teacher who praised you (perhaps for the first time in your life)? Was it it the coach who gave you a place to play even if you couldn't hit the side of the barn? Or the relative or neighbor who stepped in for a missing parent when it mattered?
Tim Kaine, and Fred Rogers before him, represent those people. In my family we refer to it as the ones who “actually show up.” They are long cherished; often without knowing their impact.
Odds are Hillary and Tim will win this election. Let's take this opportunity to destroy two gender stereotypes. Girls can lead the nation. Boys can care about others. It will free generations.
So yes, Tim “raise your hands in the air and dance like you don't care.” Only stop if you want to play your harmonica (which sounds great) .
