BREAKING POLL FOR CA 49: Statistical Dead Heat between Applegate and Issa
Released Monday, August 29 by Strategies 360: A survey of 599 likely voters in California’s 49th Congressional district shows Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate earning 42 percent support to 45 percent for the useless and uber-rich incumbent Darrell Issa. The poll’s margin of error is 4 points. The findings are consistent with another recent poll that showed a 43-43 tie.
In the new poll, Applegate holds a 14-point lead among self-identifying independents and a whopping 18-point lead among voters registered as “NPP” (No Party Preference).
In a district that Mitt Romney carried by six points, Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by five, 46-41. The pollster states:
The Trump dynamic spells trouble for Issa. Trump is deeply unpopular, holding a 37-60 percent favorable-unfavorable rating (21-75 percent among Independents). Issa’s strong endorsement of Trump—calling him the “obvious choice”—is unlikely to sit well with middle-of-the-road voters in CA49.
No wonder Doug said “Issa is scared” at our backyard fundraiser Sunday…..
The Grassroots Momentum Behind Doug Applegate: Our 2-Hour Lunch Haul
Friends and neighbors organized a Sunday noon fundraiser for Applegate, and collected $10,000 $12,000 for his campaign. Nearly 100 supporters attended the lively two-hour event in Oceanside.
The Applegate campaign is on fire, barnstorming across the 49th with the wind at its back. I’ve been to several campaign events and each time the crowd is bigger and more excited. The candidate himself is optimistic yet realistic, stating: “We can’t out-spend them so we have to out-vote them.”
According to the Strategies 360 memo, Applegate needs only to outperform the “generic” Democrat by 4 points to win, and in this election year, the stars are aligned to accomplish just that:
- First, Colonel Applegate is no ordinary Democratic challenger. He is far and away the most viable candidate to ever take on Issa.
- Second, Issa is increasingly disliked year after year.
- Third, Trump’s unpopularity and Issa’s embrace of Trump further weaken Issa’s support.
- Fourth, Democrats will turn out to vote in greater numbers because there’s a presidential election.
Here are more photos from our event….
And here’s a make-shift yard sign one of my neighbors rigged by taping an Applegate window sign to an old campaign sign. That’s what I call enthusiasm! (Real Applegate yard signs available after Labor Day).
