Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) strikes again, once again putting his handlers in the position of scrambling to understand, and then explain, what their boss meant.
This time he was opining on poor mothers and daycare, suggesting that poor, single moms "take jobs in the daycare centers watching their children, a practice Wisconsin restricted seven years ago after massive fraud involving government subsidies." That happened seven years ago, right? He was a Senate candidate then, too busy to pay attention to what was happening with state government in the state he was running for election in. It's another fun time for his staff, though.
Johnson's solution for addressing poverty is the latest awkward comment from the freshman senator who compared voting in November to the decision by doomed 9/11 passengers on Flight 93 to storm the cockpit, criticized “The Lego Movie” as anti-business propaganda and appeared to suggest that a documentary could replace teachers. […]
Johnson has been repeatedly asked to clarify what he means by saying he supports, but does not endorse, Donald Trump as the Republican nominee. And last year he had to back away from an off-handed comment, again made in a radio interview, when he referred to "idiot inner-city kids" while criticizing liberals on school choice.
Just giving Johnson the opportunity to clarify himself is giving the man too much credit—how can he clarify what he doesn't understand in the first place? Wisconsin voters seem to get that now, though the latest polling is inconsistent. A just-released poll from Monmouth gives Russ Feingold a 13-point lead, 54-41, while Marquette has an outlier even within its own polling with the race at 48-45. That's the closest any poll has been in this race and is at odds with their 53-42 finding last month. So, Wisconsin, get yourself figured out. You've got a lot to make up for this November.
Can you give $3 to help Russ Feingold put this one away?
