Looks like Dr. Oz really won't ask Donald Trump the tough questions about his health. That big interview where Trump was going to show Hillary Clinton up by releasing medical reports with Dr. Oz as tour guide? It won’t be quite what the revelation it was billed as. Or even what Dr. Oz walked it back to with his hedge that he wouldn’t ask Trump “questions he doesn’t want to have answered.”
Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway laid the groundwork for this super-surprising turn of events on Tuesday, saying “I don’t know why we need such extensive medical reporting when we all have a right to privacy,” even as she argued Hillary Clinton should release more medical information. I guess the “we all” who have a right to privacy includes Donald Trump but not Hillary Clinton.
And you have to wonder. Earlier, Trump said he felt “very confident” about the results of this physical—“Otherwise I wouldn't be telling you I did this.” Did something happen to make him less confident and less willing to talk about it?
Hey there, traditional media. I’ll be looking for you to respond to this exactly as you would if Clinton promised to release medical records on television and then backed out. No falling back on “nobody really thought Trump would do this.” Maybe nobody did … but he said he would, and he got the headlines saying he would, and now he’s going to sit there and get the TV time with Dr. Oz without holding up his side. Whatever is left of his credibility should take a hit—and questions about when he’ll release his medical records still need to be asked.
