Donald Trump visited Flint, Michigan today to talk about the lead contaminated water problem that has forced residents to use bottled water for over a year. It is interesting to note that Mr. Trump who wanted to show that he cares for the plight of the residents of Flint was making his first visit to that city since lead was detected in its water supply in April 2014. With about six weeks for the election, the timing looks very suspicious. Trump has been pandering to African Americans and did this recently at a black church in Detroit, Michigan.
Somehow, Donald Trump seems to believe that the best place to pander to black people is at black churches. Black church people are hospitable and will give anyone a warm welcome - even Dylan Roof - that's probably why Donald Trump thought it would be great to visit another black church while he was in Flint. Unfortunately, that visit did not turn out well for him. In his talk he started to trash Hillary Clinton, when the minister, Rev. Faith Green Timmons walked up to him and said,
Mr. Trump, I invited you here to thank us for what we've done in Flint, not give a political speech.
Trump's interruption by Rev. Timmons was just the prelude of what was to follow. One woman shouted that Trump had used discriminatory housing practices in his buildings, causing the celebrity businessman to respond,
Never, you're wrong. Never would.
At this stage, Trump decided this was not a friendly audience and abruptly ended his speech, which had lasted six minutes. On his way out, he was accompanied by more heckling.
If there is a lesson for Donald Trump and his experience in the church at Flint, it is that you can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time - especially black people, those days are over.
