The White House has announced that President Obama will invoke the Antiquities Act to create the first marine monument in the Atlantic, called the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument . Located offshore of Massachusetts, the canyons rival the Grand Canyon for length and depth and are home to several unique ecosystems. The Seamounts — which are underwater mountains that did not grow tall enough to reach the ocean surface- are likewise home to a large variety of unique wildlife. while the monument will cover close to 5000 sq miles, it is a reduction in size from the original proposal for the area. This is Obama’s 24th new monument, and 27th use of the Antiquities Act, his next monument- expected to be either a further expansion of California Coastal or a new marine monument off of California- will tie FDR’s record for uses of the Antiquities Act -28. And that’s not including many other proposals, like Gold Butte, Castner Range, La Bajada Mesa or the Grand Canyon. I strongly applaud the presidents move, and hope that he ends up with 40+ monuments to his tally- which is more than Congress has done in 110 years. there is no limit to how many monuments a president may create- they could create 1000 if they wished. Well done, Mr President! Keep it up!
