according to this NBC4 in NY article, Ahmad Rahami was taken into custody after engaging gunfire with police in Linden, NJ. One officer was shot, but apparently unharmed because he was wearing a vest.
Adding — Link for New York Times story
From the Times story:
Mr. Rahami, 28, was identified on surveillance video near the locations of both the bomb that exploded in Chelsea and another device that did not detonate a few blocks away. He was described as a naturalized citizen of Afghan descent who had been living with his family in Elizabeth, N.J.
Worth reading the TImes story because of the amount of detail on the background of the case, the suspect, and his family.
UPDATE at 12;08 — listening to coverage.
- identified both by video of both NY scenes and fingerprint on one of unexploded NJ pipes
- 5 associates of some sort taken in a car yesterday
- family apartment in Elizabeth searched under federal warrant
- he was sleeping in a doorway of a bar in Linden. Person arriving to open saw him, called police who recognized him when trying to waken him, he pulled gun, fired hitting an officer and took off. They pursued and wounded him, taking him into custody.
- OF GREAT IMPORTANCE — there is a history of ongoing conflict between his father/family who own a restaurant where there has been conflict with local authorities as a result his father suing local authorities for racial/ethnic discrimination. Thus it is possible there is NO connection to terrorism but rather a generalized anger towards a society that discriminates against Muslims, but it could also be a classic set-up for self-radicalization.
Also worth considering — several different kinds of devices, none of which were apparently competently made. Consider, only 1 of three pipes exploded. Consider the ineffectiveness of the pressure cooker device that did go off in Chelsea compared to the devices at the Boston Marathon.
