Alicia Machado, like Khizr and Ghazala Khan before her, is not sitting silently as Donald Trump smears her. The former Miss Universe responded to Trump on Instagram, writing, alongside a picture of herself wrapped in an American flag:
The Republican candidate and his campaign team are again generating new attacks and insults and trying to revive old defamations and false accusations about my life. They're doing all this with the goal of intimidating, humiliating, and throwing me off balance yet again. The attacks are nothing but slander and cheap lies generated with ill intentions, that have no basis and have been distributed by tabloids. Of course, this isn't the first time I've encountered a situation like this. Via his hateful campaign, the Republican candidate insists on discrediting and demoralizing a woman, which is emblematic of his most frightening characteristics. Through this, he seeks to distract attention away from his real problems, and from his inability to even pretend aspire to be the leader of this great country.

It is a thing to behold how Trump just cannot stop making himself look terrible for a huge audience by attacking people in what should be punching down … except that his attacks elevate his targets, giving them a chance to show their dignity and strength while Trump is shown for just how low he is. And what a master stroke by Hillary Clinton luring him into this one.
