There are several comments/diaries here that stipulate that while Bernie may not be able to get anything done, neither will Hillary.
I am going to vote for Hillary Clinton, in part because I believe she can get things done. I believe she can get a Republican Congress to pass progressive legislation. I would like to explain why.
Consider an environment that requires the cooperation of a large number of people. In such a setting, if the leader of a cause wags his/her finger at a large subset of that people, and calls them names, then that is one way to guarantee that you will never get their cooperation. It does not matter how noble your cause, and how worthy your plans ~ if you wag your finger at people, and call them names for not recognizing the wisdom of your words, then you will never get their cooperation for that particular cause.
The flip side of this is also true. You can have a large number of people who absolutely hate you for whatever reason (they think you lied on Benghazi, for instance); but they will work with you if you identify a cause that they agree with, and you let them take (or share) the credit. So, a good leader learns how to whisper their ideas to their opponents, let them chew on it for a while, and then have it spout forth as the opponents idea.
Now, this is not a natural skill. Most of us are not born with the tools necessary to pull this off; and we tend to be more of the “wag your finger at your opponent” type when we are young. I know I was ~ and I can certainly recall a young Hillary Clinton who was that way in 1993. That Hillary Clinton was young, and idealistic, and thought that the wisdom of her version of Hillarycare should have been obvious to the Republicans. I recall the times she called out the Republicans for opposing Hillarycare. Ironically, you were either for change, or you were part of the establishment. It was not the only reason (lack of support from progressives was a major factor), but it was a factor why Hillarycare was defeated.
That Hillary Clinton would not have gotten my vote. That is also the reason why the Bernie Sanders of 2016 will not be getting my vote (he reminds me of Hillary Clinton, circa 1993).
Fortunately, she appears to have learnt from her mistakes. After the failure of Hillarycare, she worked with those same Republicans in Congress to get the Children’s Health Insurance Bill. The SCHIP program was passed while they were actively trying to prosecute her for murdering her aide etc. In this case, there was no wagging of the finger, and no name calling. It was done quietly ~ the ideas were whispered via Sen Kennedy to Sen Hatch (R-Utah), who quietly cosponsored a bill that was passed in 1997.
On her stump speech, she often talks about this as an example of “not giving up”. I do wish she would discuss the incident in a little more depth ~ I see that example as more than just “not giving up” (although that is clearly admirable in itself), but learning from past mistakes (which is also very admirable).
So, I am confident that this version of Hillary Clinton will be able to get things done...even when the Republicans are actively trying to impeach her.
This version of Hillary Clinton deserves my vote. I believe she can get things done.
