Mr George Will (R, Nam dodger, skirt chaser) wrote a column excoriating the late Dalton Trumbo as a traitor. Being a member of the CPUSA is not by itself treason. So, Mr Will listed a litany of charges and allegations that required a thorough review of Dalton Trumbos’ life. Predictably, Mr Will (chicken hawk, platinum level) failed to mention that Trumbo was a combat photographer during the invasion of Okinawa. The fighting and dying at Okinawa was as awful as any of the WWII battles in the South Pacific. My father served there and like a lot of combat veterans, he spared his family the gory details.
Mr Will is certainly justified to be envious of the literary success Dalton Trumbo achieved. Johnny Got His Gun sure made an impression with those of us who sweated the draft during the Viet Nam war years. No ‘Champagne Flight Line’ for hillbillies.
George Will must consider writing an anti war book to be treason. A world-girdling military empire can’t be sustained if we schnooks in fly over country read such a book and decide to stay home with tough talking chicken hawks like Trump, Romney, Dubya and Cheney.
