Didn’t think Donald Trump’s semi-infinite connections to Russia could get any weirder? Oh, they can. They really, really can.
In September, UN high commissioner on human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein called on the world to reject “populist” bigots like Dutch politician Geert Wilders. He then called out a number of far-right nationalists including someone you've heard of.
And yet what Mr Wilders shares in common with Mr Trump, Mr Orban, Mr Zeman, Mr Hofer, Mr Fico, Madame Le Pen, Mr Farage, he also shares with Da’esh. All seek in varying degrees to recover a past, halcyon and so pure in form, where sunlit fields are settled by peoples united by ethnicity or religion – living peacefully in isolation, pilots of their fate, free of crime, foreign influence and war. A past that most certainly, in reality, did not exist anywhere, ever.
Okay. UN human rights commissioner calls on people not to fall for authoritarian jerkwads who espouse racial purity. That sounds right. But somebody didn't like it.
Russia's government lodged a formal complaint last month with the United Nations over a top U.N. official's condemnations of Donald Trump and some European politicians, diplomats told The Associated Press, an intervention that underscores the unusual links between the Republican presidential nominee and the Kremlin.
So, there you go, Donnie. Big brother Vlad is looking out for you. He won’t let those bullies who are out to protect human rights pick on his little sidekick.
