San Francisco voters will have to deal with 25 local ballot measures this November in addition to the 17 statewide initiatives on the California state ballot.
One of the many things I do in researching how to vote is to try to see who is for and against each measure. I often go through the slate cards of various progressive organizations that make endorsements. This year I also went to the effort of going to the ballot guide to compile the list of official proponents and opponents. (Never again! It turned out to be a lot more work than I was expecting.)
In San Francisco, each initiative has an impartial analysis – in our case, by the Ballot Simplification Committee, a group of people who work in public meetings to write an impartial summary of each ballot measure in plain language. In addition, each measure includes the Controller’s Statement to explain the potential fiscal impact of the measure.
Just like on the California ballot, we also have a section where the official proponents of the measure can argue for it and the official opponents can argue against it, and can also include a brief rebuttal of each other statements. Proponents and opponents often get high-profile officials or organizations to sign on to these official statements to give their argument more weight. Sometimes the rebuttals are signed by different people in order to get more people involved.
But in addition, San Francisco’s ballot materials include something that the statewide initiatives do not: other individuals and organizations can also pay to include brief statements of support or opposition to individual measures. When someone’s paid argument was paid for by a third party, the third party’s name or organization is also included, which is valuable (follow the money)! Not every measure has paid statements on both sides; some (like Prop. A) don’t have paid statements on either side.
I’ve captured every person and organization that supports or opposes one or more ballot measures in the official San Francisco Ballot Guide. I’ve also written down the endorsements made by a variety of mostly progressive local and state organizations that will be included in this and other diaries in the coming days.
This is just meant to have a quick place to have all of the endorsements for and against each local ballot measure easily organized in one place. It is absolutely not meant to substitute reading the actual ballot summary or language, the Controller’s fiscal statement, or the actual arguments for or against. I just thought it might be helpful to see patterns of supporters and opponents working together. For more details, you can find electronic versions of the San Francisco Voter Guide in two versions:
After the jump, I’ll explain how the endorsements are coded and go through each measure.
Explanation of Coding
For each ballot measure, I’ve broken supporters and opponents into three different types.
Supporters
Official Proponent: (1) A San Francisco supervisor who voted to put it on the ballot, or (2) a person or organization who signed the official Proponent’s Argument in Favor, or the Rebuttal to Opponent’s Argument Against in the Voter Information Pamphlet
Additional Paid Ballot Arguments in Support: (1) A person or organization who signed a paid ballot statement in favor of the ballot measure, or (2) a person or organization who paid for someone else’s paid ballot statement in favor of the ballot measure
Endorsed in Support: Incomplete list of individuals or organizations I looked up who announced their official endorsement and urged a “Yes” vote through other means such as on their website, through press releases or slate cards, through the proponent organization, or through other official means
Note that Official Proponents who also sign on to a Paid Ballot Argument will only be listed once under Official Proponents. They may also be listed again under Endorsed in Support, since that section was outside of the ballot guide and handled separately.
Opponents
Official Opponent: (1) A SF supervisor who voted against putting it on the ballot, or (2) a person or organization who signed the official Opponent’s Argument Against or the Rebuttal to Proponent's Argument in Favor in the Voter Information Pamphlet
Additional Paid Ballot Arguments Against: (1) A person or organization who signed a paid ballot statement against the ballot measure, or (2) a person or organization who paid for someone else’s paid ballot statement against of the ballot measure
Endorsed in Opposition: Incomplete list of individuals or organizations I looked up who announced official opposition to the measure and urged a “No” vote through other means such as on their website, through press releases or slate cards, through the official opposition organization, or other official means
Note that Official Opponents who also sign on to a Paid Ballot Argument will only be listed once under Official Opponents. They may also be listed again under Endorsed in Opposition, since that section was outside of the ballot guide and handled separately.
