Given how utterly vilified Donald Trump was in July and August when he criticized the family of Army Capt. Humayun S.M. Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004, common sense suggests he might have tried a different approach.
But no, Trump waded into the whole, sorted, offensive mess all over again, repeating what he said in July, that Kahn would be alive today if Trump was president at the time. Khizr Khan, Capt. Khan’s father wasted no time in calling Trump out.
“We know that our son, Captain Humayan Khan, is an American hero. We also know that Donald Trump is not telling the truth when he says he was against the Iraq war,” Khan said in a statement. “Our son served this country with honor and distinction, and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The only thing that Donald Trump sacrifices is the truth.”
Capt. Kahn’s father and mother appeared at the Democratic National Convention in July to speak not only about their son, but also about the impact Trump’s desire to ban all Muslins from entering the country would have had on their family. Capt. Kahn came to the U.S. with his family from Pakistan and became an American citizen.
