Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) has been doing his damnedest to not take a stand when it comes to Donald Trump, apparently assuming that no position is a safe position. It's not working out so well for him.
[A]fter spending months trying to dodge Trump’s long shadow, he is facing renewed pressure to pick a side in the growing GOP schism.
As allegations of sexual assault pile up against the real estate mogul, Democrat Katie McGinty is hounding Toomey, accusing him of putting politics above "basic human decency.”
“Toomey now has the distinction of being the only Senate candidate in the entire United States of America to refuse to come clean about whether or not he supports Donald Trump,” she said.
Toomey has denounced Trump's comments, but when pushed "said repeatedly that he remains “unpersuaded” and hasn’t made a decision about the top of his party's ticket." That certainly isn't making the issue go away. In fact, it's making Toomey a laughingstock. Literally. He was roasted by Jimmy Kimmel Thursday night for it (watch below the fold).
The fake ad Kimmel creates for Toomey isn't a far cry from his actual ad on Trump, where all that he'll say is "I have a lot of disagreements with Donald Trump. I've been very clear about that. But what's important for Pennsylvanians is having a senator who'll stand up to any president's bad ideas." Which implies he's just fine with this guy being president, as long as he gets to keep his job.
Just about every Republican running for re-election this year has embarrassed themselves over Trump, but Toomey sure does win this week in craven politics. But keep on trying to have it both ways, Toomey. Your lack of principle is what's going to lose you your job.
Can you chip in $3 to Katie McGinty to send Pat Toomey packing?
