Marco Gutierrez, founder and sole member of Latinos for Trump, may have been on to something when he said, “My culture is a very dominant culture.” Some solid evidence to support this turned up last week in the English-language online publication Mexico News Daily. Here’s an article that they published: Free beer courtesy of Trump supporters
Here’s a synopsis: Cervecería de Baja California, located in Mexicali (more on them below), designed a t-shirt with Trump’s face, and, at first glance, the message, “I support Donald.” They sent some of their employees to Los Angeles, Alta California, and sold a whackload of them for $5 apiece. They told buyers that they would be using the profit to build a wall of beers. However, when the buyers put the shirts on, they discovered, if they looked in a mirror, that their body heat transformed the image on the shirt, adding a clown nose to Trump, scratching out the word “support”, and changing the message to “Donald el que lo lea”, which is a play on a Mexican joke that translates into “whoever reads this is a Donald.” and, instead of building a wall of beers, Cervecería de Baja California used the revenue to throw a big party in Mexico City.
Cervecería de Baja California is one of a fast-growing number of micro-breweries (cervezas artesanales in Spanish) in Mexico, and they sell under the brand name Cucapá. They didn’t have an easy time getting established. Mexico’s two major breweries (Dos Equis and Corona, to keep this simple) have a monopoly on distribution, so the micro-breweries had to open their own chain of stores, The Beer Company, as well as organize micro-brew festivals all over the country.
I was a micro-brew aficionado long before moving to Mexico, and it was only a matter of a few days before I discovered my local Beer Company store. Cucapá’s Green Card Barley Wine has long been a favourite of mine. For the sake of full disclosure, however, barley wine is an acquired taste. If you like stout, their La Migra is good. Here’s a list, in English, of their products.
