I have progress to report to those who are following the construction of Wings and Aji’s little house! There is a lot more work to do, so we are still asking for repeated shares of their YouCaring page via social media (or email, or word of mouth — whatever works for you!) But we can be proud of how much work has been completed so far.
Above, you can see the shipment of roofing materials being delivered late last week. As long as they were being forklifted off the truck, the crew had them raised to the second floor, to save them having to lug them up there. The rolls are extremely heavy.
They are using BRAI® roofing, which is a “modified bitumen roofing material”. It’s basically a rolled roofing membrane backed with hardened tar and applied with a torch. To use it, first the crew cover the (flat, sloped) roof with felt, as seen at right. Then the roofing is unrolled gradually as the surface in front of it is heated with a torch, so the tar melts and seals to the surface on contact. Ultimately, the surface of the roof will be painted silver, to reflect heat better. I have more photos below the flat silver roof!

More detail at Aji’s blog HERE.
It’s a great relief to have the roof on, and the weather has been perfect for that purpose (although really weird compared to normal there for this time of year). Now the next big expense is, the exterior needs to be plastered, and windows and doors need to be ordered. Don’t forget, before the interior work can start, a whole new septic field has to be dug before the ground freezes — that, too, is a big-ticket item.
So! Please, please help spread the word about this project, AND about Wings’ beautiful silverwork, as seen on his site HERE. Believe it or not, there’s much more expense to this project than you see in the YouCaring goal, and Wings and Aji are paying for that plus their regular living expenses out of their business selling Wings’ (and others’) Native arts, including jewelry and other silver, pottery, leatherwork, drums, photography, and more.
An earlier diary by kishik, found here, provides links to each gallery on Wings’ website, for ease of navigation by mobile users. And this diary by belinda ridgewood explains how to navigate Wings’ site on a desktop. If you want to commission a piece from Wings for the holidays, now is the time to do it — the creative process takes time.
Many, many thanks to everyone who’s helped bring the house this far!!!
How To Help:
- The YouCaring fundraiser allows you to donate specifically to this cause. You can also share the fundraiser via social networks by using the “Grab Our Widget” button (and other social media buttons) on that page.
- Their Amazon wishlist mostly supports the health needs of their rescue animals and themselves, if that’s more your style.
- Purchases from Wings Silverworks will help them make a living the way they’d prefer, by selling Wings’ work as an exceptionally talented NDN silversmith and photographer. Here’s a diary that describes how to browse and buy at Wings’ web gallery, including how to look at available photographs. (Take a look at this gorgeous one from this week!)
- If you prefer, donate via PayPal at Aji’s blog, or at her Tumblr blog where she posts her own writing and photography.
- Kosmail belinda ridgewood if you absolutely need to donate by mailing a paper check.
- And Tweet, share on FaceBook, tip/rec/republish on Daily Kos, randomly email your friends about it, drop it into casual conversations. This seems minor, but it is not! When you share, please link to this YouCaring page, or embed the widget!
