So I dropped in to the Barnes & Noble in Rockville, MD today (looking for a journal) and this is what I saw. I started to do my usual thing — I do this at Costco also — of covering books by right-wing crazies (e.g., Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, etc.) with rational books. No vandalism, no theft, just making the awful books a little less prominent.
But as I started to move the books around, I realized that it was an impossible task. It was a disgusting display: the vast majority of the books on the table were pro-Trump and/or anti-Hillary.
We just came back from a campaign trip to Cleveland where we talked to mainly Puerto Rican people who were friendly and kind to us and definitely pro-Hillary. Seeing this display in the middle of my very liberal community was disheartening.
I thought about the few Trump supporters we met up with on our trip and their negative comments about Hillary. With the large amount of this kind of trash, is it any wonder that less politically informed people have a bad opinion of Hillary Clinton? Without a shred of evidence, without a single fact the right wing has been largely successful at smearing and damaging Secretary Clinton’s character, work, and integrity. She was correct all those years ago — it is a vast right-wing conspiracy.
