For months, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to comment about Donald Trump. Or rather, say anything good. In October, McConnell called Trump’s sexual boasts on the Access Hollywood tape “repugnant” and said the candidate needed to apologize.
"As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape," McConnell said then.
But now, in the closing days of the election, McConnell has finally found his voice, and it is pleasing to Trump’s ears.
"We need a new president, Donald Trump, to be the most powerful Republican in America," McConnell said, according to the Associated Press. "If America votes like Kentucky, we'll be fine,"
Hypocrite or opportunist? A little of both, probably; McConnell is in danger of losing his leadership position should the Democrats retake the Senate and they only need to pick up four or more seats to do it. And, according to the most recent polling by fivethirthyeight.com, they have a 63 percent chance of doing so.
