Here's the full exchange in one of my favorite passages from one of my favorite TV shows, "Firefly".
For those of you who don't know, Mal is the owner and captain of a trading vessel, really a pirate ship. He used to be a soldier. He was in the last war, and took part in the final battle in which the Good Guys lost and the terrible Alliance won. (Sound familiar?)
After the war, Mal stepped away from life in the Alliance, found himself a ship, found a crew, and kept flying, no longer taking part in grand political movements--he has learned he can't to anything about it anyway--but living his life, and living by a strong personal code.
Years later, Mal has taken a new passenger on his ship, a fugitive named Simon, who doesn't really trust Mal. After all, Mal is essentially a pirate. Following some unpleasantness involving Alliance entanglements, gunplay and assorted mayhem, Mal and his crew escape pretty much intact, but Simon is uncomfortable:
----------------
Simon: I'm trying to put this as delicately as I can... How do I know you won't kill me in my sleep?
Mal: You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake. You'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.
Simon: Are you always this sentimental?
Mal: I had a good day.
Simon: You had the Alliance on you, criminals and savages... Half the people on the ship have been shot or wounded including yourself, and you're harboring known fugitives.
Mal: Well, we're still flying.
Simon: That's not much.
Mal: It's enough.
----------------
Me? I'm still flying, and it's enough.
