Updating this at the top with new information. The student who was tackled is working to have the charges dropped and has released this statement:
“Since last night, however, we have learned that the man, an OSU student, is not a right-wing activist and was himself upset by the Trump election. We have received further information we will not disclose to protect the man’s privacy, but which has made us confident he should not face charges for the action.
You can read the original story below, but it appears this was a misunderstanding by several of the parties involved. I’ve updated the headline to reflect the new information that the student was NOT a Trump supporter.
An Ohio State student was arrested and subsequently suspended by the university after viciously tackling another student who was speaking out against Donald Trump on campus. The attack was captured on video by multiple students. From ABC News:
The attacker, identified as 24-year-old Shane Stanton, was arrested by police and charged with one count of misdemeanor assault.
Stanton was also placed under indefinite suspension from the university, Gerard Basalla, president of the Undergraduate Student Government, told The Lantern.
“The assault that occurred — that’s what it was — in the Union tonight is completely unacceptable,” Basalla said. “Every person on this campus has the right to feel safe and voice their opinion without fearing harm. We can’t be having this.”
