We gathered at Ocean Beach Park near the pier at noon today, 11-19-16 for a small but passionate anti-Trump rally. Seeing as how it was put together at the last minute by the organizers, it was pretty dang rocking.
There were a few local news stations, and law enforcement was on the scene to make sure the resistors didn’t set fire to dumpsters and smash shop windows (that’s snark).
Actually, there were a few Trump supporters at the gathering, but as far as I could tell, they were just standing around being snide. I did notice that one of them holding a sign managed to corner a cameraman, and blah blah blahed to him for several minutes; it was ok, because i was standing near one of the organizers when she stated why we were there.
I loved seeing the families there:
Here’s a pretty shifty looking family with a sign they made in 20 minutes…
After the speechifying, we took a little stroll up Newport Ave., towards the Post Office (I think? I’m new to the area), where we were greeted by many thumbs up.
At one point, however, we passed a group of Trump supporters that took it upon themselves to rev their penises motorcycles very loud and shout at us. It didn’t bother me, being a seasoned campaigner, but it scared the piss out of my daughters and their BFF. It was an excellent teachable moment— now they understand why the kids at their school are being such jerks… they get it from the penises adults in their lives.
Before we left the park, I grabbed a shot of this memorial plaque. We stood near it the entire time, and I stood a little straighter, remembering all my friends and family that I was speaking for today.
I’m not sure how the honor and integrity of this country is to be preserved for the next several years— the hate is thick and awful already. All I know is, we have to keep resisting, and not pretend that what’s happening now is normal. I saw Keith Olberman say that this morning, and he’s never been more right.
Resist any way you can. Nothing is too small.
If pets can join in, so can you.
Thanks for a great rally today, and special thanks to Mark Sumner, for posting the protest dates and times that I just managed to catch this morning. My mother, my daughters and I all thank you, and we’ll be at as many protests as we can.
Peace
