Nancy Pelosi is sounding the alarm. Pointing out that Republicans today sound an awful lot like Republicans in 1996 as they prepared to impeach Bill Clinton, she said in a statement that:
“In addition to there being no grounds for impeachment to begin with, moving to impeach President Hillary Clinton for alleged activities from before the election would be a brazen attempt to nullify the vote of the American people, outside our constitutional framework and destructive to the Framers’ intent.
“Congressional Republicans have stated their purpose is to waste taxpayer money and time on years of frivolous investigations instead of creating jobs through investing in infrastructure, education and innovation, and strengthening our democracy by ending the scourge of secret money in our elections.
“The American people want Republicans to accept the will of the people and take impeachment off the table. Responsible Republicans must do so immediately.”
It turns out that you don’t even need a responsible Republican for that, just one in a tough re-election battle:
Of course, if Issa gets past his Democratic opponent, Doug Applegate, don’t be one bit surprised if he changes his tune.
Republicans are telling us what they have planned and we should believe them. The fact that House Republicans are already talking about impeachment—and Senate Republicans are already talking about continuing their Supreme Court blockade—is a harsh reminder of why it’s so important to elect Democrats to Congress.
