American voters seem to be just fine with a president-elect who has innumerable ties to an authoritarian Russian government that has invaded its neighbors, threatened U.S. allies, and deliberately bombed both trapped civilians and humanitarian forces trying to bring those civilians relief—and, oh yeah, hacked Democratic emails and used them to manipulate the election.
And Russia is certainly overjoyed with Trump's victory and looking forward to a United States that doesn’t insist on all those old alliances and agreements. It’s enough to have them partying in Moscow.
The group cheering Trump reflected a strange feature of this election, the frequent coincidence of Kremlin views with that of the Republican candidate. As the results came in, the group, clammy from the close heat of the bar and repeating vodka toasts, roared out as Trump took each state. “Florida is ours,” a man with a beard cried out, hopping up and down.
And the man that Trump does/does not have a strong relationship with has sent his congrats.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is giving a thumbs-up to president-elect Donald Trump's victory.
In a brief statement Wednesday, the Kremlin said Putin has sent Trump a telegram to congratulate him on winning. Putin expressed "his hope to work together for removing Russian-American relations from their crisis state."
