Winter has arrived chez gizmo. After holding off for an extended interval, we’re currently being inundated with a bout of lake-effect snow. Looking at the 10-day forecast, snow is predicted one each of them. They’re predicting 2 feet over the weekend. Such is life in the snowbelt. More below the fold…

After 15 years of living here, I’m sort of resigned to living in a place that averages over 100 inches of snow every winter. Some years are worse than others, and we’ll have to see just how bad this particular year shakes out. We actually had a significant snowfall before Thanksgiving, but the last traces of that had melted, and we had actually had some very temperate days last week. Some people were wearing shorts. They’re not wearing shorts today. I saw several accidents just on the short drive home, and they had to close one of the local interstates due to a multi-vehicle accident. People have forgotten how to drive in snow. Happens every year.
I’m caught behind in my chores as usual. We got a delivery of firewood in the driveway immediately after Thanksgiving. I had been moving a few wheelbarrow loads from the driveway to the back deck every day, where it would eventually be stacked for easy access over the winter. As of this afternoon, most of the wood was in a huge, chaotic pile in the middle of the deck, while a significant residual remains in the driveway. It was my hope to stack as much as I could of the wood already on the deck, and then transport as much of the wood still in the driveway to the deck.
Well, I managed to stack most of the wood on the deck, but by the time I had called it quits on that task, the snow was far too deep, and it was too dark, to even think about trying to move wood in a wheelbarrow through the snow. Months may pass before I get the opportunity to move that wood—or I may just have to move a few pieces by the armload every day.
Fortunately, we weren’t planning on going anywhere this weekend. If we had, our plans would be shot. A quiet weekend at home by the fire really doesn’t sound that bad.
Now, on to the comments!

I'd like to submit this comment by dallasdave, about the need to move forward together, to remember that we have more in common than not, and that we need to resist the urge to turn on each other when the chips are down. From TomP’s recommended post on HRC’s “Thank You” party for donors.
