American debt is not callable. The Chinese cannot call our debt. The claim that they can, main page poster notwithstanding, is completely and totally wrong. Actually, I remember that as a right wing talk radio attack on the Clinton Administration, and right wing talk radio was completely wrong.
And by the way, if they could call our debt: The dollar is a reserve currency. The debt is payable in dollars which we, like, print. In fact, we printed (electronically) about 6 trillion of them for “quantitative easing”, and contrary to Austrian crackpot economics there was no inflation. If the Chinese do sell our bonds on the open market, what will they do with the proceeds?
