Welcome to the Backyard Science group’s publication of The Daily Bucket. Please let us know what goes on around you in a comment. Your weather, the birds at your feeder, a pretty flower, how big that full moon looked, are all fine topics. Please include your general area, and any related photos. We love photos.
Most folks know the usual ways that plants spread life, such as seeds, cones, parachutes, rhizomes, and roots.
Here’s a variation; runners. I love my strawberry runners. When I accidently buried a corner of my strawberry bed under 300 lbs. of sandy loam, I simply replanted it with strawberry runners, which are aboveground, fast-spreading specialized stems that set down new plants every foot or so.
I moved my curly rush into the garage, and it is sending out runners almost 2 feet long. The ends stuck to the table top. When it was in the outdoor creek last year, it spread a Rapunzel-thick mass of runners over three feet downstream.
Gotta run!
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN
Is your imagination running away with you, regarding your next back yard project? What have you noted in your area or travels? As usual, please post your observations and general location in your comments. I’ll respond in between working on an endless list of garden chores.
"Spotlight on Green News & Views" will be posted every Saturday at 5pm Pacific Time and every Wednesday at 3:30 Pacific Time on the Daily Kos front page. Be sure to recommend and comment in the diary.
