I’ve done a number of seasonal diaries about my favorite music this time of year, but tonight I have a new spin on the Twelve Days Of Christmas (for a quick history of the song, see Wikipedia)… a non-holiday song for each day:
First One Tin Soldier, by Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter; first recorded in 1969 by The Original Caste. K1’s anti-war pick surely would be sung by that partridge in a pear tree.
Second Two Princes, by the Spin Doctors. Perhaps turtledoves would have worked better than diamonds or rockets.
Third 3AM, by Matchbox Twenty. Also known as the time I’ve been waking up each evening, possibly due to noise from the french hens.
Fourth Four Minutes, by Madonna (feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland). The birds better not chat for long, but it’s enough time to say Happy to whoever they’ve called!
Fifth Mambo No. 5, by Lou Bega. Perfect song to get the wearers of the golden rings moving!
Sixth Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, by Dream Theater. At 42’ long, the geese should have plenty of time to lay. However you want to take that.
Seventh One Week, by the BareNaked Ladies. Given swans mate for life (although apparently ~6% ‘divorce’ and find new mates), clearly they were supposed to be Gift #8 until that one week when one pair squabbled over whatever swans squabble over.
Eighth Eight Days A Week, by The Beatles. I’m sure the milk maids feel like they work at least this many!
Ninth Nine Planets, by Justin Roberts. The ladies are dancing because Pluto totally IS a planet, dammit!!
Tenth Big Ten Inch Record, by Bull Moose Jackson way back in 1952 (Aerosmith COVERED it). How many of those lords are a’leaping towards the milkmaids or dancing ladies with this tune in their head?
Eleventh 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, by U2. Sadly, the pipers will be sitting this tune out, although possibly some ladies may need a dance partner.
Twelfth Little Twelve Toes, by Schoolhouse Rock. Because drummers and schools go together!
