It looks like New Hampshire was a major wakeup call to the White House, and they were worried about the Clinton campaign going forward. Jay Carney, former White House Press secretary, telegraphed that President Obama prefers Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders. This is not a surprise at all which the President prefers, but what may be more of a surprise is how inconsequential endorsements have become in this primary season.
"I think the president has signaled while still remaining neutral that he supports Secretary Clinton's candidacy and who prefer to see her as the nominee," Carney said on CNN Wednesday following coverage of the president's speech to the Illinois state Senate in Springfield.

"I think he is maintaining that tradition of not intervening in a party primary," he added. "But I don't think there is any doubt that he wants Hillary to win the nomination and believes she would be the best candidate in the fall and the most effective as president in carrying forward what he has achieved."

I’m not sure how this keeps the tradition of not intervening in a party primary, but it goes to show that the Washington establishment is running scared.
