Every four years, our two parties nominate candidates for President, and at their respective conventions get up, attempt to excite the voting public and give their delegates their marching orders. Invariably this includes the overused cliché, “This is the most important election of our lifetime.”
This time, it really is.
I have something to say that is going to sound holier than thou, and — okay — maybe it is: This election is no longer about resume, or income equality, or Wall Street money, or campaign finance reform, or electing the first woman President, or electing the first Jewish President or any of the things that are near and dear to your collective progressive hearts. It doesn’t matter how progressive our candidates are, or how progressive you want them to be.
It is most likely that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee. Let that sink in for a moment: It is most likely that Donald Trump will be running against either Hillary or Bernie.
Donald Trump is a lunatic, crypto-fascist. He’s not just at the extreme end of the spectrum: He’s off the spectrum. I wish he were stupid, and untalented, and non-charismatic, but that is not the case. The fact is that Donald Trump is incredibly dangerous — and he actually could win this whole thing. I hope not but he could.
And the mere fact that these boneheads are voting for him, and the way that know-nothing, racist, fascist-followers managed to get control of one of our two political parties means they need to be spanked by losing control of it all. Even as we stop the egomaniacal sociopath at the top of the ticket.
Nothing would please me more than to see Trump lose the electoral college 538 — 0… except maybe that the Democrats take control of Senate and the House and a bunch of governorships too. And, yes, I may have my favorite candidate and you may have yours, but none of that matters come the fall.
This primary season will eventually end, and the backers of one of the candidates on this site will have to accept defeat. That’s always disappointing.
So to Hillary supporters I say this: Maybe it should be her turn. And, yes, it is time we had a woman President. But, if Bernie somehow manages to come from behind and win the nomination, you had all better be there in the fall.
And to Bernie supporters I say this: OK, so Bernie speaks truth to power. And maybe you want to strip the establishment from the Democratic party because it’s not progressive enough for you. You, too, better get off your damned high horse and show up in the fall.
Guess what: All of us stand a snowball’s chance in hell of getting one bit of our agenda enacted, slow or fast, if we get President Trump. He’ll be too busy building his damned wall, banning Muslims from the United States, driving our economy into the shitter, and almost blowing up the entire world over and over again.
Is everybody getting the picture? Our democracy is in jeopardy if we all — WE ALL — don’t show up and support our nominee in the fall. And, in all honesty, I cannot take you seriously as a progressive of any stripe if you cannot see the forest for the trees. If you are one of the morons that posts on this site that you will only support your favorite in the fall, you truly are an idiot. I suspect I’m not alone in that opinion.
No one issue is more important than stopping this Republican party at this time with this buffoon. There is nobody that is too left, or not too left on this side to not deserve your vote. The Democratic establishment will be great. The revolution will be great. Because neither is Donald Trump. And that is why this really is the most important election of our lifetime. And if you sit it out and Trump wins, it’s your fault.
