McDonald’s and other fast food places have taken a beating the past few years on their labor practices. Living wage protests are growing as is the public’s knowledge of how fast food CEOs line their pockets using public welfare to subsidize their terrible wages. But McDonald’s has even more indictments coming their way.
McDonald’s workers who have suffered severe burns in their workplace filed 28 health and safety complaints against the company in 19 cities over the past two weeks, a labor group announced on Monday.

Using condiments to soothe workplace burns is more than just a one-time occurrence at McDonald’s. According to a survey by Hart Research Associates, 33% of fast-food workers who were burned at work were told by their manager to use condiments such mustard, butter or ketchup instead of burn cream.
McDonald’s is quick to point out that workers have been organizing to raise their wages and telling people about the awful working conditions they suffer under is a ploy to get paid $15 an hour. Or as other countries call it, a living wage.
Martisse Campbell works at McDonald’s in Philadelphia and is often tasked with emptying the grease traps at his store.
“One of my coworkers and I have to empty the grease trap without protective gear, and since we were never given the proper equipment or training, we just dump the hot grease into a plastic bag in a box of ice,” said Campbell. “Once, my coworker got badly burned, and our manager told him: ‘Put mayonnaise on it, you’ll be good.’”
You know that happened.
Working in a kitchen in a restaurant guarantees you will get burned. Working in a fast food restaurant, where most of the “cooking” is done in a microwave, should reduce that number, and at the very least, get treated with something other than mayonnaise.
