Donald Trump and his children overlooked one serious detail about voting in New York’s Republican primary — they didn’t declare a party affiliation in time. New York has strict primary registration deadlines. From Think Progress:
New York has a closed primary system that required previously registered voters to officially declare a party affiliation by October 9, 2015 in order to cast ballots in the April 19 presidential primary.
Those rigid requirements are expected to cause problems next week, since more than three million New Yorkers, or 27 percent of the state’s voters, are registered outside the Republican and Democratic parties, and many of them might not be aware of the rules. In fact, among the disenfranchised are Eric and Ivanka Trump, children of Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.
Donald Trump revealed the party registration lapse on Monday’s edition of Fox & Friends. Partial transcript below:
Very, very guilty. Sad!
