North Carolina State Senator Buck Newton, a RepublicanOfCourse, appeared at a pro-HB2 rally in Raleigh Monday to give a rousing defense of the state's new law that bars transgendered people from using restrooms not in accordance with their birth certificates. Here are the impassioned closing arguments of his speech:
“Go home. Tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about, and how hard we must fight to keep our state straight. [Applause] Thank you very much.”
Which is effing odd, considering that he and other proponents of the viciously anti-LGBT law have been selling it as necessary for "safety" in restrooms, and not as an abstract battle to keep the state of North Carolina "straight." Live and learn.
Newton is the Republican nominee for the state's office of attorney general, presumably in accordance with the ongoing Republican tradition of finding the worst piece of crap available for each state position. So he's not just a strong proponent of the law, he's running to be the guy who gets to enforce the North Carolina government's efforts to "keep our state straight."
Just wait until this poor man finds out that as mere geopolitical construct, a “state” doesn’t actually have a gender identity of its own. He’ll be pouting for weeks.
