Well — I kinda don’t know what to say. A coworker of mine who is an alcoholic and well-known addicted-to-alcohol miscreant-let’s call her Bobbie-is going to jail for a long time.
This is a weird story — and since I got it from Bobbie, who can’t possibly say in two words what you can say in two thousand — this diary is likely to be tl:dr. haha. I’m not really a friend of hers, since every minute she spends off from work, I have to do her job, in addition to my own.
She was totally shocked when the police showed up to arrest her two weeks ago. She doesn’t remember the incident that prompted it, being drunk at the time. She had a number of DUIs at that time, so everything that happened was a probation violation. It seems that her and her sister and a number of other people were drinking beer and painting her sister’s house. Ok. And then her sister’s daughter had some kind of psychotic break and went crazy, prompting the neighbors to call the police. (Bobbie has all kinds of this stuff — her own children are suicidal and mentally ill — and so are the sister’s). Sigh.
So the cops show up, and they say, well, we can’t release this person into any of your’s custody, we have to release her to someone who’s sober. So they breathalyzed all of them. Including Bobbie, and then found out that she was violating her probation by drinking. Oh also, she assaulted a police officer at that time — which she doesn’t remember — headbutted the guy — they went easy on her — assaulting a police officer is a FELONY — they made it a gross misdemeanor. I asked her, how would you dare? they shoot people for less than that. She looks at me like I’m not quite bright, and says “Rose — I’m not black”.
Well. It would be pointless to tell her about the irony in THAT statement, as I’m sure you know.
Anyways. She will have to go back to jail at the end of April. She can come out on work-release to come to work. GPS on car, no stops, strictly jail and work. People at work will probably be very sorry for her and give her treats while she is there, and let her surf the Net and make as many phone calls as she wants, (I hope nobody is stupid enough to supply her alcohol at work, but you never know).
In any case, the point of this diary is, while I have no sympathy at all for Bobbie (well maybe a little-squooshy liberal that I am), is that anything you have to buy in jail is priced at 5-10 times what you could get it for at Walmart or Target. And you can’t get stuff from outside. All those prison stories about loving family members bringing you cookies and stuff are not true. NOTHING from outside. You either buy it at the very limited prison commissary or you don’t have it. And the prices are ridiculous.
As annoyed as I am at Bobbie, I think that is just wrong.
Oh also, she said “I certainly don’t think I’m better than anybody else, but I was in there with meth addicts and bank robbers. They all kinda laughed at me when they found out what I was in for, they think that’s just so cute”.
She’s looking at maybe 8 months in jail, after her sentencing date on April 25.
I feel for all the people in jail that DON’T have money, that don’t even have what Bobbie has. Maybe the black people that she dismissed so blithely. Who also have to pay these extortionate prices for basic necessities.
