When Donald Trump assumed the Republican nomination, the map throughout the nation changed somewhat, and Democratic Party leaders, looking to press their advantage, began looking at major media markets where Republicans could be put at risk.
With a hot US Senate race in Missouri featuring Jason Kander — who is raising money and overperforming most expectations, outsiders looked at the Kansas City media market as one that would be full of get-out the vote message for Democrats. With the Kansas 3rd District bordering this media market, why not take advantage of the opportunity to put up a real race against Kevin Yoder (R-KS3), the Republican who became the first Kansas federally elected to come out and endorse Donald Trump in the state of Kansas.
Democrats believe that they can begin to shift the odds in the district, with an aggressive down ballot strategy in Johnson County and Wyandotte, encouraging more candidates to work hard to turn out the votes across the district in hopes of picking off a seat.
Sidie, who enters the race just with less than two weeks before the deadline feels confident that fundraising for his campaign will be solid, and thanks to a single market, he believes he can tie Kevin Yoder to the incredibly
unpopular governor Sam Brownback and Donald Trump.
While Sidie doesn’t mention Trump in his original announcement, the performance of Trump in 3rd District caucus for the Republicans is likely an indicator of why Democrats feel there is a chance for them in the third district. Facing against Ted Cruz, Trump suffered a blow out loss in Kansas, with many Kansans when polled saying they can “never” consider Trump, at a rate much higher than many other states.
While Trump’s “never” rate doesn’t give Democratic presidential hopes enough of a boost in the state of Kansas, the performance within the third district, combined with a friendly media market and a savvy, full ticket press will be something many Democratic party members in Kansas haven’t seen in a federal race for a very, very long time.
