An unidentified man and his young son were checking out at a Walmart register when the woman behind them began berating him for using food stamps. She starts off lecturing him about working harder. He counters that he works 5-60 hours a week trying to provide for his family (perhaps he works at Walmart, which costs taxpayers $6.2 billion in public assistance for their low paid employees each year.) She gets louder, exclaiming “you aren’t providing for his family, I am!”
The conversation gets more heated (although, hats off to him for remaining as calm as he did) before she finally accuses him of being a “Hillary or Bernie” supporters, exclaiming that she’s “not stupid. They give it to you, so you vote for them.”
Remember only a few years ago when republicans ran around calling themselves “compassionate conservatives?” Guess those days are long gone now. And why not? Conservative legislatures around the country are hellbent on passing laws aimed at shaming food stamp recipients. This woman is a mere extension of their legislative shaming.
