Today is the day. More than six months after John Boehner’s resignation from the House of Representatives, the good people of Ohio’s 8th Congressional District will finally the vacant set. The winner of today’s special election will serve the remainder of the current term until January 2017.
The Democratic candidate for the seat is Kossack Corey Foister, who has lived in the district his whole life. Born in 1990, Corey would become the youngest current member of Congress by about six years.
His Republican opponent, Warren Davidson is a darling of the Republican House Freedom Caucus and would be an instant contender to be ‘America’s Worst Congressman’.
Normally, this is a solidly red district with a Cook PVI of R+14. During the 2014 midterms, Boehner defeated Democrat Tom Poetter 67-27. But today’s special election shapes up to be a very low turnout affair. According to the latest figures, just 3576 absentee ballots have been cast, down more than 90% from 2014’s total. In such a low turnout election, GOTV matters more than anything else and upsets are possible. If you are interested in helping Corey GOTV and win today, please check out the second part of the diary below.
Here are four things you can do right now to help Corey:
1) Contact people you know in OH-08
Ohio's 8th congressional district sits on the west side of Ohio, bordering Indiana. The cities of Hamilton, Fairfield, Middletown, Springfield, Eaton, Greenville, Piqua, Troy, and parts of Dayton, Riverside, and Wright Patterson Air Force Base are part of the district.
If you know anybody who lives in this district: Contact them. Tell them about tomorrow’s election. Tell them aboutCorey. Ask them to vote. If necessary, give them information where they can vote. The polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
2) Help Corey via social media
Interacting with Corey on social media will make him more visible to voters in his district.
Corey on FaceBook: Give the site a like, like his status updates and write something encouraging.
Corey on Twitter: Follow him, heart his tweets, retweet him.
Corey on Instagram: Follow him, like his updates, comment.
3) Donate to Corey
That’s pretty straightforward: Corey’s ActBlue page
And yes, donating today will still help Corey. E. g. running ads on social media is easily done within an hour, but can cost thousands of dollars per day.
4) Rec and share this diary
If we want Corey to win, we need as many people as possible to help out. Please make this diary visible, rec it for visibility at DKos, share it to make it visible outside DKos.
