Voting is underway in Ohio’s 8th Congressional District special election to fill the House seat vacated by former Speaker John Boehner. While The New York Times seems to be very confident that Republican Freedom Caucus darling Warren Davidson will win, Democratic candidate and Kossack Corey Foister is working hard to turn out every vote.
Will this be enough? Maybe not, but as I said in an earlier diary:
Normally, this is a solidly red district with a Cook PVI of R+14. During the 2014 midterms, Boehner defeatedDemocrat Tom Poetter 67-27. But today’s special election shapes up to be a very low turnout affair. According to the latest figures, just 3576 absentee ballots have been cast, down more than 90% from 2014’s total.
Awareness seems to be so low that local media has actually published an article titled “Hey, there's an (important) election today”. This article also notes, that “low turnout projections could be a good thing for Democrat Corey Foister, of Fairfield, who is a childhood cancer survivor”.
Ultimately, GOTV will decide this election. Corey and Ohio Democrats are working hard to stage this upset. If you live in this district, please vote (if you haven’t already). If you live elsewhere, you can
