As the Democratic Party’s veepstakes continue, one of the most often mentioned names is Virginia senator (and former Governor) Tim Kaine. And while Kaine might not be the most exciting or progressive candidate, he is the most reliable to help Hillary Clinton win the White House. While I personally would prefer Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, losing her seat in the Senate would have disastrous consequences. Three of the the possible VP contenders are HUD Secretary Julian Castro, Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, and Admiral (Ret.) James Stavridis. While all of these men are decent options, none of them have ever been in a tough political fight. In this toxic political environment, Hillary’s VP needs to have the experience of being on the campaign trail. And while Senators Booker and Brown would also be excellent campaigners and Veeps, either one would have their seat filled by a Republican governor. Given the fact that the Democrats will likely have a razor-thin majority (or none at all), we simply cannot give up these seats. This brings us to Kaine himself. He was a governor and now a Senator from a swing state, which clearly helps Hillary. Secondly, he's a white man, which is one of the key constituencies that Bernie Sanders excelled with. And lastly, he speaks perfect Spanish, knowing when to laugh at jokes and how to react in an interview. And even though my first choice (And, I'm sure, many of yours) may not be Kaine, he's clearly Hillary’s top choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
