Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is saying that an officer-involved shooting last Thursday, July 28, may have violated departmental policy. Johnson made the statement after reviewing squad car dashboard camera footage along with body camera footage.
Two officers involved in the shooting were relieved of their police powers on Friday and a third officer was relieved of his police powers over the weekend, a step above the more routine consequence of putting officers on desk duty.
Authorities have said officers stopped a Jaguar convertible that had been reported stolen. Police said officers opened fire after the driver, identified as 19-year old Paul O'Neal, put the car in drive and sideswiped a squad car and a parked vehicle. He was later pronounced dead [from a gunshot wound to the back] at a hospital.
O'Neal was black; police have not provided any identifying information about the officers who were involved.
Johnson’s actions are at lightning speed compared to the majority of past investigations of Chicago Police Department shootings—when they actually conducted investigations and didn’t try to cover them up.
