Big Money is flooding into this election from all directions. While this might be discouraging to those of us fighting for worker’s rights and progressive causes this election has also seen an increase in the number of small individual campaign contributions. While these small donations tend to be fractions of what wealthy individuals & super PACs contribute, they speak louder than the Money itself. It’s the language of people power. It’s the dialect of 2 cents. When millions of people stand together & support candidacies they believe in with small contributions we witness the power of people. Even if it is only a 15$ contribution; These contributions add up. So what if the Koch Brothers can outgun us on the amount of money spent? We have to understand that it is much better for a candidate to be supported by millions of workers than it is to be supported by a handful of wealthy contributors. If support only comes from the .01% whose wealth is perpetuated and sustained by a system that is unjust; surely it will erode. The very nature of winner-take-all capitalism means that the number of folks that reside within the bracket that owns 90% of global wealth will continually diminish with respect to population. Our market system exacerbates a rapid accumulation of wealth for those with the most capital in the game. History shows us that such gross injustice & inequality is unsustainable in the long run & is often met with revolution. You cannot win a revolution with Money alone. There are much stronger forces at play.
If anything is to be done about the Citizens United decision it will be the result of what happens this election cycle. Democrats have a real opportunity to take back the Senate from a Republican party that is seemingly imploding. People power is going to win this election. Even if it is only 3$ you can give to each candidate: every single individual contribution is an action & affirmation that builds confidence. Building confidence not only in our candidates but in ourselves & the political process that begs our utmost attention. Attention we cannot afford to waste on reality-television stars & fear mongers.
