I’m currently at work, and procrastinating, and trying to come up with topics for my Wednesday diary, and I realized one of the big time sinks on the internet — webcomics archives. I have a collection of 32 webcomics I read on a daily basis, in addition to syndicated comic strips (like Calvin & Hobbes or Family Circus). For the syndicated strips I use King Features and Go Comics, and I subscribe to both so that I can put all the comics I like on a single page and view the most recent ones without ads.
Webcomics are a somewhat different beast — they don’t need to fit in a certain height or width for newspaper print; they also don’t have to adhere to the same standards as print comics for language or for update schedules. I sort my bookmarks based on how frequently the webcomics update — randomly, twice a week, three times a week, five days a week, and daily. So, here are some of my favorites:
xkcd:
A geeky comic, sometimes with references to things that go over my head, but they have hover text and are generally amusing.
Schlock Mercenary:
If you like sci-fi and humor, this is a strip you’ll probably enjoy. It’s been running without fail every day since June 12, 2000. The archives are deep, but broken into story lines if you don’t want to start straight from the beginning.
Weregeek:
The archives on this only go back to November 2006, and it doesn’t update on weekends. It’s a comic about gaming and life in general among the group of friends the strip follows. Generally good for a laugh.
A Girl and Her Fed:
This one is interesting. Ghosts are real (others from history will show up, including Frederick Douglass), and have power. The strip has shadow government agencies, a talking koala (with an attitude), ghosts, cyborgs, conspiracy theories, and dick jokes. Archives are from March 2006, but the strip only updates one or two days a week. There are also books. This one made me laugh out loud at numerous points the first time I read through the archive.
So, anyway, those are a few of the webcomics I read on a regular basis. Hope you enjoy them if you decide to peruse their archives (I am in no way responsible for time lost due to archive binges.) Any webcomics you enjoy? Please share in the comments!
One last thing to wrap this diary up — belinda ridgewood posted a diary on Monday to help get eyes on Aji & Wings’ housebuilding fundraiser; thanks to matching funds and generous donations, we moved the needle quite a bit. One thing that would really help is shares — either of the diary itself, or from the YouCaring page directly — it has buttons for sharing on FaceBook, Twitter, and via Email. The more eyes that see the fundraiser, the more it helps. Thanks!
And, as always, this is an open thread. What’s on your mind tonight?
