Plenty of big money types who helped bankroll Mitt Romney's run for president in 2012 aren't playing at the top of the ticket in 2016, but that doesn't mean they're sitting this election out. They're funneling their largesse downticket, with maximum contributions to individual candidates and millions to Super PACs to ensure a GOP congressional majority—and maximum obstruction to a President Clinton.
Hedge fund manager Paul Singer, an outspoken critic of Trump, donated $1 million to Restore Our Future, a super PAC that backed Romney in 2012, and $5 million this election cycle to Conservative Solutions, a super PAC supporting Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. […]
Unsurprisingly, Singer has not donated anything to Trump. But, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures, he has given over $3 million to two super PACs, the Congressional Leadership Fund and American Unity PAC, aimed at electing Republicans to Congress. He has donated over $200,000 to House Speaker Paul Ryan's joint re-election campaign fund and the National Republican Congressional Committee and $600,000 to New York Wins PAC, aimed at electing Republicans to Congress in New York. […]
Similarly, retired New York hedge fund manager Julian Robertson gave over $2 million to Romney's super PAC in 2012. During the primary season, he gave $2 million to Jeb Bush's super PAC and $500,000 to John Kasich's. Robertson has refrained from donating to any committees associated with the Trump campaign this cycle. He has given $2 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $75,000 to Ryan's joint fundraising effort and $70,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee.
So Trump is unacceptable, but the elected Republicans responsible for creating the cesspool from which Trump was born are just hunky-dory for these guys. After all, they're still fighting to keep the billionaires' taxes low, so they have to be kept around. Besides, all signs point to a big Trump loss, so that'd be throwing their money away. There's nothing principled in their refusal to back Trump, particularly in light of how much they're pouring into trying to rescue Republicans just as craven but better at modulating their public statements.
Those millions, though, are propping up a rotting GOP corpse, keeping the zombie alive to fight the next Democratic president. To keep the dysfunction going, but mostly to keep them from having to actually pay taxes. What’s the best way to fight those millions keeping Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell in power? Beat them with small dollar donations to take the Democratic majority back.
