Mike Pence, the GOP running mate to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, spoke to the extreme right-wing folks of Family Research Council (FRC) this week. The Indiana governor tried his best to pacify and appease the FRC audience, saying that even though Trump ignored the topic of abortion in his Republican National Convention speech, Pence will do all he can to make abortion illegal and he and Trump will commence the day they enter office.
During the summit which took place in Washington DC, it was clear that Pence was not merely saying what the FRC fanatics wanted to hear. He meant it. Rewire (previously known as RH Reality Check) cites some of Pence’s speech here:
“I want to live to see the day that we put the sanctity of life back at the center of American law, and we send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history, where it belongs,” said Pence.
“Let me assure you, the Trump-Pence administration will stand for the sanctity of life and defend the unborn from the first day we take office,” the Indiana governor, a supporter of some of the country’s most restrictive anti-abortion measures, told the crowd.
Yep, this is one of the many treats American women and men have to look forward to if Trump wins in November. But there’s more.
Pence touted fake clinics, also known as crisis pregnancy centers—organizations that routinely lie to pregnant people to persuade them not to seek abortion care—that he helped to fund in his home state. He name-checked Real Alternatives, the fake clinic umbrella organization that received $3.5 million in state funds under his leadership.
Pence pledged that Trump will sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, the popular anti-choice copycat legislation banning abortion care at 20 weeks; uphold the Hyde Amendment, the restriction on federal funding for abortion care that disproportionately impacts people with low incomes and people of color; and appoint U.S. Supreme Court justices “who will strictly construe the Constitution of the United States in the tradition of the late and great justice Antonin Scalia.”
This is not the first time Pence called Roe v. Wade an ash heap. No, Mike Pence, one of the biggest ass heaps in history, used the term in July. He must have thought it was cute.
VoteSmart.org reports Pence holds a 100% pro-life record with the National Right to Life Committee and we’re loving that Pence holds a 0% score with Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He can’t get much lower.
Anti-choice news group LiveActionNews brags that Pence’s most recent major pro-life action was signing Indiana’s law banning abortions for genetic abnormalities, race, or sex; requiring ultrasounds before abortions and admitting privileges for abortionists; and mandating that aborted babies be either buried or cremated by abortion facilities.
Lovely. Thanks for that bit of information, LiveAction, we’ll pass it on to the pro-choice Republicans/swing voters. Pence also lied to the FRC audience saying that Planned Parenthood uses federal family planning money to fund abortions, when Federal law clearly does not allow it.
Pence goes on and on and you can read the full story here, but the bottom line is, if the “Trump-Pence Wet-Dream-Team” are elected into the Oval Office, women may very well lose their right to choose what’s best for their own body, family, and future. At minimum, Trump and Pence will make the lives of American women hell. Something for the country’s Republican women to ponder now—and at the voting booth.
