So the Freedom Caucus maniacs are wasting precious time on the House floor by forcing a floor vote on impeaching IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. Because the IRS did something that ended up not really being a thing that pissed them off years before Koskinen became commissioner. Meanwhile, House Democrats are using their time for this:
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights icon and leader of the nearly 26-hour sit-in, called Wednesday for votes on gun control measures before Congress adjourns this month until after Election Day.
“The people demand that we act and that we act now — not next week, next month or next year, but now — before we leave and go home,” Lewis said, surrounded by 10 other House Democrats.
Lewis then stood silently for about 15 seconds, until the five minutes allotted for his speech expired. He yielded back his time, unlike at the start of the sit-in, when House Republicans put the chamber into recess and shut off the cameras while Democrats were still speaking.
When the House came back into session, they began debate on the rules that will govern debate and voting on two unrelated bills. At least, that's what Republicans intended. Democrats used their allotted debate time to repeat their calls for action on gun safety legislation. Rep. Jim McGovern closed out their debate time.
I don't know what it's going to take to compel my Republican colleagues to do something. To do more than have a moment of silence in the aftermath of every massacre. These are real people. They had families. They were loved. And now they are gone. We need to do something. And for the life of me I can't understand the inaction in this House. The silence and the indifference. It is appalling and I would suggest to my colleagues rather than trying to bring legislation to the floor to slap us on the wrist for having the audacity to come to the floor and demand this House of Representatives do its job, my Republican friends ought to do their job. […]
This is real. This is meaningful. It's a heck of a lot more important than the message bills that are going nowhere that are being brought to this floor. […] I plead with my Republican colleagues, do your job, do something. Enough of this silence. Enough of this indifference. Too many people in this country are dying.
This is also the Democratic caucus goading Speaker Paul Ryan to put his money where his big mouth is, and make good on his promise to punish Democrats for their gun violence protest and sit-in this summer. Because that's exactly what Ryan needs right now, the media focused on his censuring the conscience of the Congress—Georgia Rep. John Lewis—for calling for action on legislation that the majority of voters wholeheartedly support. This is why we elect Democrats, and why we need more of them in the House.
Can you chip in $3 to each of these candidates to get more Democrats into the House?
