Received this e-mail today from Democracy for America:
From Jeannette Rankin and Shirley Chisholm to Elizabeth Warren and Donna Edwards, progressive women have been key leaders on progressive issues in Congress for many decades.
Right now, women make up less than 20% of the House of Representatives. That body has been controlled for the last six years by extremist Republicans who have waged an unprecedented war on women, on voting rights, on racial justice -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
As we work to rebuild progressive majorities in Congress, we need to seize opportunities to send more progressive women to Capitol Hill. Right now, there are many amazing DFA-endorsed progressive women running for the U.S. House from coast to coast. I want to highlight FOUR of them for you below, because they're running competitive races and it's critically urgent that we go all in together now to make sure they have the resources to win.
With your help today, several women running for Congress this year -- like Nanette Barrágan, Morgan Carroll, Pramila Jayapal, and Zephyr Teachout -- could be future Senators, future Governors, and maybe even a future President.
These four progressive women need you right now. Please chip in $3 or more today to help elect these champions to Congress in 2016 -- and support DFA's work to create a more reflective democracy.
Nanette Barragán, Morgan Carroll, Pramila Jayapal, and Zephyr Teachout can win, but they need your help right now:
- Nanette Barragán: She is running in California's 44th Congressional District, taking on one of the biggest recipients of oil and tobacco money in the entire state. On the Hermosa Beach City Council, she fearlessly took on Big Oil and won, and now she's running to raise the minimum wage, fight for good, local jobs, and guarantee equal pay for equal work.
- Morgan Carroll: Running for Colorado's 6th Congressional district against a right-wing extremist, Morgan is determined to deliver a fair wage, a safe work environment, good benefits, and a chance to enjoy retirement security for all. She's going to address our student debt crisis, and wants to fix our broken campaign finance system.
- Pramila Jayapal: She is running in Washington's 7th Congressional district, and will fight for a higher minimum wage, for paid sick and safe days, and equal pay for equal work, because women deserve every penny they've earned. She supports expanding Social Security and Medicare, making college debt-free, and fighting to bring Wall Street to justice.
- Zephyr Teachout: Running in New York's 19th Congressional district, Zephyr Teachout is a national leader against the corruption of our political system by special interests and big corporations. In Congress she will work to get corporate money out of politics, protect our fragile water resources, support public education, and support a small business economy.
With your support, these four progressive women will be elected to the House of Representatives next year and become national leaders on these urgent issues. They will lead from day one -- and beyond.
By stepping up today when these four candidates need you the most, you can build a more reflective democracy and expand the ranks of progressive women in Congress. Please chip in $3 or more to help elect Nanette Barrágan, Morgan Carroll, Pramila Jayapal, and Zephyr Teachout!
Thank you for helping send these progressive champions to Congress.
